After 30 years, they still have their original $10,000 principal plus $30,000 in cash, totaling $40,000.
Investor B chooses compound interest, letting the annual earnings reinvest. Because their balance grows each year, the 10% return is computed on a larger sum. After 30 years, Investor B’s balance grows to over $174,494. The reinvestment of earnings created an additional $134,494 of passive wealth.
The Power of the Rule of 72
The Rule of 72 is a simple formula used to estimate how many years it will take for your investment to double at a given nominal interest rate. Simply divide 72 by your expected annual rate of return. For example, at an 8% interest rate, your money will double in approximately 9 years (72 / 8 = 9).
